     John Rickerson was born on 1 April 1808 at Oswego, Oswego Co, New York. It was Onondaga County at the time.1 He married Mary Bradford Cheney, daughter of Caleb Cheney and Rachel Raven, on 23 June 1831.2 John Rickerson was a farmer.3 He enlisted as a private on 4 August 1862 at Antwerp, Jefferson Co, New York. He mustered into Co. C, 10th NY Heavy Artillery, on 11 Sep 1862.1,4 He mustered out of military service on 21 May 1865 at Petersburg, Virginia. According to his military discharge, John Rickerson stood five feet 5 1/2 inches, had a light complexion, blue eyes and red hair.1,4 He lived between 1865 and 1874 at Carthage, Wilna, Jefferson Co, New York.5 He lived on 11 April 1878 at Antwerp, Jefferson Co, New York.1 He resided with his son G.F. Rickerson between 1889 and 1891 at Hailesboro, St Lawrence Co, New York.1,6 He died on 10 October 1891 at Hailesboro, Fowler, St Lawrence Co, New York, at age 83; According to his obituary in the Gouverneur Herald, he died in Fowler, Oct. 10, 1891, of heart trouble, aged 83 years, 6 months.7,8 He was buried on 11 October 1891 at Hailesboro Cemetery, Fowler, St Lawrence Co, New York.7,9

John Rickerson1

     John Rickerson was born circa 1750. He married Elizabeth Stevens circa 1772 at Connecticut.1 John Rickerson fought during the American Revolution from the town of Norwich for ten days during the Lexington Alarm in 1775 and again in Capt. Huntington's Company in 1776.2 He died between 1820 and 1823. He must have died very shortly after the 1820 census. According to the Edes MS, his son Ransom "lived with his mother until his marriage," and Ransom married in 1823.3

John Rickerson lived in 1803 at Cherry Valley, Otsego Co, New York.2 He married second Margaret Wheaton before 1806. John Rickerson resided in 1806 at Jefferson Co, New York; in what his granddaughter called the "Black River Country." The Black River flows through Jefferson County.2 He died on 10 January 1849 at Bridgewater, Oneida Co, New York; This is probably John Rickerson's death. There is a record for a John Rickerson, aged 69, who died of cancer in Bridgewater, NY 10 Jan 1849.
